Bad Reaction

It was a day in late August, I was bathing in the sea
The air was hot and heavy, like a lover’s breath on me
I felt a sharp and sudden pain- it took me by surprise
I saw these tentacles arising, and wrap around my thigh
I said ‘Not this time, not this way- you’re not having me.’
I’ve broken bones, seen my own grey skull
And my ego’s black and blue
I am a physical disaster, that I’ve grown accustomed to
Oh but when my heart’s a pounding, take me to Emergency
And through the needles and the pain relief, the doctor says to me
‘You’ve had a bad, bad reaction, to that creature in the sea
My dear, a bad, bad reaction, that’s how it seems to me
My dear, your bad, bad reaction just shows your sensitivity
My dear, a bad, bad reaction.
As he administered the medicine, he said ‘You might hallucinate,
And realise the world around you, just reflects your current state.
I’ve seen your punch-bag heart stop beating, during cardiac arrest,
That’s thirty-two years of inhaling, without exhaling the excess.
You’re full of bad, bad reactions, to those creatures in the sea
My dear, your bad bad reaction, that's how it seems to me
Don’t push your bad, bad reactions back on me.’
I’ve broken bones and smashed through windows
And my ego’s black and blue.
I am a physical disaster, that I’ve grown accustomed to
Oh but when my heart’s a pounding, take me to Emergency
And through the needles and the pain relief, the doctor says to me
'You’ve had a bad, bad reaction, to that creatures in the sea
My dear, your bad bad reactions, shows your sensitivity
Don’t push your bad, bad reactions back on me.’
They call it bad, bad reactions
Running round the outside, give it all in
Talking to the people that you never let in
Don't push your bad bad reactions
Back on me.

I met a man who said the world was for his taking
He used his kit, his charming wit, his spirit was not one for breaking
I watched him, unimpressed, punch the air and then the door
He’s used to getting what he wants, and bizarrely
We all want more of him.
Outrageous statements turn the air blue sending shocks and shivers
Tingles of excitement through the ones who know that he’ll deliver
But then he comes a’ cropper, battles with beloved lover
Pointed fingers, loaded weapons
I understand how this stuff happens.
And that said man, who said the world was for his making
He used his kit, his charming wit, his spirit was not made for taking
I watched him, so bemused, skipping past me on the floor
He’s used to getting what he wants, and naturally
We all want more of him.
He can attack, fight, bite, drink through the night
Shout, swear, drive fast, to show his might
But gives just like I’ve never known
Spends half his lifetime on the phone
Trying to sort stuff out with his other half
Still finds the time to make us laugh
At his intoxicated history
and its wavering integrity.
But then he comes a’ cropper, battles with beloved lover
Pointed fingers, loaded weapons
I dislike it, but it still happens.
So that's the man who said the world was for his taking,
He used his kit, his charming wit
His spirit was not made for breaking
I watched him, I watched him
Skipping past me, on the floor
He's used to getting what he wants
And naturally we all want more of him.
He laughs at himself in both wonder and depreciation
He knows not how to separate
His quest for love, and thrill-seek dedication.
So that’s the man who said the world was for his taking
He used his kit, his charming wit
But all the time his heart was breaking.
I wish him all the best, whatever it may be, his quest
His intoxicated history
An unimportant mystery
Because he’s captivating company for me.

If you go past Shakespeare’s Circus, and right at Regent’s Street
You’ll find a woman living, with the world tucked at her feet.
Her beauty knows no trying, her gaze will hold you still.
Overwhelmed and unprepared for the foot of this great bill
You’re all undone and caught, in a state of slight distress
You thought you were the strong one, you thought you would impress
But she’s completely bowled you over, she's overflowed your cup
Proud, in awe and open-mouthed, lying down but looking up
I’m lying down but looking up at Cloud Judgement
I’m lying down but looking up, oooh!
I’m lying down but looking up at Cloud Judgement
I’m lying down but looking up, oooh!
You make me go, ooh ooh….
I'm lying down, but looking up
You make me go, ooh ooh…
I'm lying down, but looking up
If you go past Shakespeare’s Circus, and left at Regent’s Street
You’ll find a man living, with the world tucked at his feet.
His charm knows no trying, his gaze will hold you still.
Overwhelmed and unprepared for the foot of this great bill
You’re all undone and caught, in a state of slight distress
You thought you were the strong one, you thought you would impress
But he’s completely bowled you over, he's overflowed your cup
Proud, in awe and open-mouthed, lying down but looking up
I’m lying down but looking up at Cloud Judgement
I’m lying down but looking up, oooh!
I’m lying down but looking up at Cloud Judgement
I’m lying down but looking up, oooh!
You make me go, ooh ooh….
I'm lying down, but looking up
You make me go, ooh ooh…
I'm lying down, but looking up
I’m lying down but looking up at Cloud Judgement
I’m lying down but looking up, oooh!
I’m lying down but looking up at Cloud Judgement
I’m lying down but looking up, oooh!
You're all undone and caught, in a state of slight distress
You thought you were the strong one, you thought you would impress
But she's completely bowled you over, she's overflowed your cup
Proud, in awe and open-mouthed, lying down but looking up
Lying down but looking up.

Take yourself to a place I cannot reach
I know, it’s not right.
To expect to you be the one,
The one I thought I’d find.
Feels the most unnatural thing to do,
To give up my love and our time.
But you’ve no love, just unyielding desire
To prove yourself unworthy of mine,
So you take your new love up a mountain
‘It’ll test us’. Oh Kilimanjaro!
I say what tests your love, is love, is love
So you take your new love up a mountain,
'It’ll test us' . Oh Kilimanjaro!
I say what tests your love, is love, is love.
With lines drawn in sand
Quick fire with a steady hand,
I thought I had won, but then I saw you had not used a gun
Like I thought you would do
With love you shot me through
And now I’m left here
One more thing to say
So you take your new love up a mountain
‘It’ll test us’. Oh Kilimanjaro!
I say what tests your love, is love, is love
So you take your new love up a mountain,
'It’ll test us'. Oh Kilimanjaro!
I say what tests your love, is love, is love.
So we’ve been doing this forever,
This elaborate hide and seek
Sometimes there is a winner
Or we may not even speak
Once the game has finished
And it is time to sleep
We’ll wake up somewhere different
No memories we’ll keep
So you take your new love up a mountain
‘It’ll test us.’ Oh Kilimanjaro!
I say what tests your love, is love, is love
So you take your new love up a mountain,
'It’ll test us'. Oh Kilimanjaro!
I say what tests your love, is love, is love.

Jaye & Foe
6 piece band of multi-instrumentalists; inspired by the absurd, outraged by the mundane. Songs full of wry observations and playful intent, aiming to start a party in your heart and blast you off into the brassmosphere. Brassy, jazzy-tinged folk with elements of swing, gypsy and reggae rhythms. We like to mix the old with the new, a vintage remix of sorts. ... more
